Best Sights & Activities -(Sightseeing)
Federal Reserve Bank
(Sights & Activities - Sightseeing)
1455 E 6th StCleveland OH 44114 216-579-2000
Description:
One of only twelve Federal Reserve banks in the country, Cleveland's branch proudly combines stunning, historic architecture and modern technology. Golden marble greets visitors in the soaring lobby, and the 100-ton steel vault door (which leads to the world's largest indoor vault) is so precisely balanced that a single person can close it. A learning center and money museum help to elucidate the role of money and its history in the world. Tours of the facility are for groups only.
Huntington Bank Building
(Sights & Activities - Sightseeing)
925 Euclid AveCleveland OH 44115
Description:
DOWNTOWN. When this bank was built in 1924, it was the country's largest. Its size and façade, however, don't give proper indication of the grandeur inside. Fashioned after Rome's great basilicas, the bank is astounding in scale and detailing. Especially impressive are massive marble columns that support more than 30 acres of floor space beneath a three-story ceiling. The spectacular structure, now part of a 22-story office and corporate complex, is not to be missed.
Lake View Cemetery
(Sights & Activities - Sightseeing)
12316 Euclid AveCleveland OH 44106 216-421-2665
Description:
Drive through this verdant cemetery and view the graves of Cleveland's rich and famous citizens, including those of John D. Rockefeller and President James Garfield. More than 102,000 people are buried here, and sightseeing's not the only draw. A picnic area provides an interesting place for a meal and affords fantastic views of the town. Wade Chapel, then, features rare and lovely Tiffany mosaics, chandeliers, and a gorgeous stained glass window. Located a few blocks from Little Italy and University Circle.
The Free Stamp
(Sights & Activities - Sightseeing)
601 Lakeside AveCleveland OH 44113
Description:
DOWNTOWN. Locals get a kick out of telling newcomers about "The Free Stamp" in front of City Hall. This public sculpture, a huge stamp-pad spelling out the word "Free," was a gift to the city from the BP Corporation. Tour guides jokingly assert that it's the only free attraction in town. Nowadays, the attraction, designed by noted artist Claes Oldenburg, has become a requisite photo op for visitors to the area.
Tower City Observation Deck
(Sights & Activities - Sightseeing)
Cleveland OH 44113 216-621-7981
Description:
From the stunning Tower City shopping complex, you can see awesome views of the Cleveland skyline, Lake Erie and surrounding areas. The 42nd-story, glass-enclosed perch was formerly part of a train station that now houses dozens of upscale shops, two of the finest hotels in town and a large movie theater. The observation deck has placards describing landmarks and views in all directions. You may have to plan ahead to visit this popular sight as it is only open on the weekends. Cash only payment policy.
